Your Association monthly update

November   2020

Dear FBA members,

Marketing is an essential part of any business strategy. And if it was important before the pandemic, it becomes even more crucial during these unprecedented times.

That’s why this issue of the FBA newsletter is largely about marketing. We’re doubling down on ideas and opportunities—sharing tactics, tips and strategies to help you ‘pump up your pitch’.

Tammy Brideau

The secret to selling to Sobeys.

A glorious opportunity to hone your selling skills to one of the
country’s largest food retailers.

By popular demand, we are pleased to bring back this great opportunity. Once approved for the Sobeys Pitch, FBA will provide you with the training and techniques to help pitch your products to Sobeys.
Several FBA members have already seen the benefits and used the training to get their products listed with Sobeys.

Dates for the pitch will be announced in January. Get in touch with Tammy to reserve your place in this powerful marketing program.
Designed for members only!

We’ve sweetened the deal

Our wildly successful “What's for Dinner” promotion
now comes with a bonus opportunity

You’ve probably already heard about CTV’s “What’s for Dinner?”—the exclusive promotional deal available only to FBA members.
“What’s For Dinner?” revolves around celebrated chef Alain Bossé preparing a weekly recipe with an FBA member product LIVE! on CTV News at 5.
Over 70 successful live segments have already aired on this massively popular TV show. Some FBA members have participated multiple times.

North Nova took part and loved the brand exposure—over 200,000 viewers tuned in.

The next round of tapings of “What’s for Dinner?” promotions is set for December. Deadline for entry is November 27, 2020.

The cost to participate is $2550+HST. Or you can share the opportunity with another FBA member.
Two companies teaming up comes to $1525 each + HST per company

And don’t forget the new bonus opportunity!
A professional food photographer will now be on hand to take studio quality shots of your product. These professional photos will be provided to you at minimal cost--for use on your website and collateral material. Just think about that: mass media exposure to 200,000 viewers plus a selection of professional food shots. A pretty sweet combo. The bonus pro photography feature is only $300+ HST.  PS you still get the pictures taken on set that day.

Did we mention funding may be available? Ask Tammy about incentive programs that may support the cost of participating in this one-of-a-kind opportunity....

Tune in to support your fellow FBA members!

November Series- The Fourth Quarter

2020 has been a unique year for many reasons. We saw significant changes to the production and processing and the retail environment. Consumer and customer priorities changed and many industries were impacted. The retail food sector remained strong as more people are working and eating at home. It is important for producers and processors to finish the year in a good position with their customers. Retailers put a lot of emphasis on winning the 4th quarter. Supplying the right amount of product when they need it will continue to help your relationships. Our SKUFood Recipes for success presented by FCC are designed to help you understand what is happening in the market and how to improve your food and beverage business.

These free webinars take place November 4 & 18

Canadian Grocery Code of Conduct

FBC-ABC with food and beverage manufacturing industry associations across Canada are appealing to provincial ministers to raise the serious issue of a much-needed Canadian Grocery Code of Conduct at a November 21 meeting of Canada’s agriculture and food ministers.

Canada has a highly concentrated grocery sector, with just five large retailers controlling over 80 percent of Canada’s grocery market. This concentration has allowed retailers to dictate the terms of business and levy unnecessary, arbitrary fees and deductions on suppliers. These measures have injected inefficiency into Canada’s food system leading to higher consumer prices, reduced food autonomy and declining investments in Canadian food and beverage processing. Today, 83 percent of new food products introduced in Canada were neither developed nor manufactured in this country.

COVID-19 has demonstrated the importance of having a resilient and robust food system. As we look to strengthen Canada’s food supply, a Canadian Grocery Code of Conduct can play a critical role in ensuring greater balance across the food supply chain and in reducing practices that create disincentives to investment and innovation in Canada.

Sampler Box Program

The U.S. Trade Commissioner Services is developing programs that allow them to connect with buyers more regularly as well as develop new contacts with more ease. One of these programs is to deliver Sampler Boxes consisting of curated shelf-stable products and marketing material to buyers. This is a way to reach buyers who might be a significant distance from their home office or even just easily get new products in front of buyers they work with locally. The provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador have partnered with the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) to provide discounted shipping for companies within their province to participate in this program.
