President’s New Year's Message
It is with optimism and excitement that we look forward to 2021.
The year 2020 has given us much to build on. This will be FBA’s third year hosting the “What’s for Dinner” promotional program and we have not missed a week as members are quick to sign up for this incredible opportunity. We have planned a second round of Sobeys Pitches for local processors and producers, opening the door for more local products to be found on retailers shelves. Our FBA Training Series has undergone a thorough review by subject matter experts and you will see a full menu of quality food safety training programs and business skills workshops presented this year.
We have taken advantage of this past year to plan, strategize, and enhance our member offerings. We have exciting things in store including new programs and a new website which will offer a repository of industry information for our members. This is a good time to be part of the FBA family and I encourage you to take advantage of the programs offered by your association and let us know what type of support you need to overcome any challenges you may be facing.
Our Executive Director, Tammy Brideau, is eager to work with you. She will be reaching out in person or virtually this year and I encourage you to use these opportunities to learn more about how your membership can help add value to your business.
Wishing you a safe and prosperous New Year!
Norm Purdy, President of the Board, FBA

Sampler Box Program The U.S. Trade Commissioner Services is developing programs that allow them to connect with buyers more regularly as well as develop new contacts with more ease. One of these programs is to deliver Sampler Boxes consisting of curated shelf-stable products and marketing material to buyers. This is a way to reach buyers who might be a significant distance from their home office or even just easily get new products in front of buyers they work with locally. The provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador have partnered with the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) to provide discounted shipping for companies within their province to participate in this program.
If you are export ready for the U.S. and would like to participate, please visit our website

Safe Food for Canadians license renewals / Renouvellement de licence de salubrité des aliments au Canada
Some Safe Food for Canadians (SFC) license holders will need to take action now to ensure they renew their license before it expires. Some SFC licenses expire on January 15, 2021 while others will expire in the days and weeks that follow.
If you have an SFC license, it can be renewed online through your My CFIA account. Submit your request for renewal as soon as possible to allow sufficient processing time. You can do so up to 120 days before the expiry date of your license. No matter how early you apply, your renewed SFC license will be valid for two years from the original expiry date.
If your license expires, your business will no longer be permitted to conduct licensed activities in accordance with the Safe Food for Canadians Act and may be subject to enforcement actions and removal from export eligibility lists. You will then need to apply for a new license and be issued a new license number, which may further disrupt your business activities including the ability to request export certification.

Help us determine your risk level
If you have not already done so, please complete the Establishment Risk Assessment (ERA) questionnaire during your renewal process to ensure your establishment risk is accurately documented. Parties without a completed ERA questionnaire are considered high-risk facilities by the CFIA and are prioritized for more frequent inspection.
