Overwhelming support for new skills training program in Atlantic Canada


Canada’s food and beverage processing industry is the top manufacturing sector employer, but in Atlantic Canada industry employment is double that of the rest of the country. Prior to Covid-19, segments of the industry, most notably seafood, were capitalizing on export opportunities, despite challenging labour shortages. To investigate the problem with partners in the region, Food Processing Skills Canada’s released a report in 2019 Securing Canada’s Fish + Seafood Workforcethat showed 7,500 new people will be required to replace retirees by 2030. And for growth potential to be realized, Atlantic Canada’s 700 businesses will have to invest in new recruitment and retention strategies.


With support from Food and Beverage Atlantic, Skills Training Atlantic Canada (STAC) was launched late last year to respond to identified workforce gaps and provide e-training in technical and social emotional skills. The program - which is based on evidence that training improves job appeal and lengthens employment tenure - equips individuals with the skills to succeed in their job and cope with Covid-19 related stressors. As businesses plan for recovery and even future growth, Food Processing Skills Canada is offering employers no cost training to upskill and strengthen their workforce.
